  Types of Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture needling is the most well-known therapy of acupuncture treatment. Typically, it usually involves the insertion of acupuncture needles. The numbers of needle inserted differ from each individual treatment, depending on the nature of the condition being treated. In general, it is between two and ten needles each treatment.

Moxibustion therapy is used to treat and prevent diseases by applying burning moxa to warm the acupoints or needles. The material used for moxibustion is mainly Chinese mugwort leaf (Artemesia vulgaris), which is processed into mugwort wool for clinical use.

Acupressure is an ancient healing art that uses gentle but firm pressure of fingers or hands, even feet to press acupoints on the meridians to stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. It is used to release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body's life force to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure does not.

Electro-acupuncture is the other kind of acupuncture therapy by which the needle is attached to a trace pulse current after it is inserted to the selected acupoint for the purpose of producing synthetic effect of electric and needling stimulation.

Ear acupuncture, also known as Auricular acupuncture, is another commonly used therapy in clinical acupuncture treatment. Ear acupuncture is used to treat and prevent diseases by stimulating certain points on the auricle with herbal seeds. And the scope of indication is wide.

Cupping is a therapy in which a jar is attached to the skin surface to cause local congestion through the negative pressure created by heat produced by ignited material in the jar. There are a great variety of jars, but the commonly used ones are bamboo jars, glass jars and pottery jars. The latter two are more powerful in suction.

Chinese Massage, also known as Tuina, is essentially massage that is targeted towards the meridians and acupuncture points. It is used for a wide variety of conditions

These are the mainly used acupuncture therapeutic methods, although other methods, such as infrared heating, Gua sha, laser acupuncture etc, are also used in acupuncture treatment. All acupuncture therapeutic methods can be applied separately or combined together within each treatment, depending on the condition being treated.
