Acupuncture
is an ancient art for the modern world today. It has been
used in western pain management since 1970s and treatment
of many medical disorders (Bensoussan, 1997). Current research
and evidence based studies have shown that acupuncture promotes
the production of ˇ°endorphinsˇ± that relieves pain, improves
the immune system, regulates blood flow and hormones, is anti-inflammatory
and anti-spasmodic, and improves overall feeling of well-being.
The
effectiveness and relative lack of risk of acupuncture treatment
has found increasing acceptance in the Western medical practice,
particularly in pain relief. In 2007 the National Health Interview
Survey estimated 3.1 million adults in the United States had
used acupuncture in the past year.
Today, Acupuncture is widely accepted all over the world,
including here in New Zealand, either to complement conventional
medical treatment or as an option when conventional medicine
has failed, significant numbers of people are turning to the
natural, drug-free alternative of balancing their qi with
acupuncture treatment. |
